In 1950s Europe, FONTANA Records was a subdivision of the PHILIPS company. In North America, FONTANA was distributed by MERCURY Records. Beginning in 1962, American FONTANA LPs were oompah bands, polkas and other instrumental and ethnic music of various countries. Nana Mouskouri was FONTANA’s first major artist, but she was by the mid-60s surpassed by such British Invasion bands as the Troggs, Merseybeats, Silkie and Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders. Following release of a scandalous simulated sex 45 and LP by Jane Birkin and husband Serge Gainsbourg, FONTANA ceased production in 1970.
FONTANA’s first various artists collection, ENGLAND’S GREATEST HITS was issued
in September of 1967 in mono (MGF 27570) and simulated stereo (SRF 67570).
The LP reached #197 on Billboard’s 200 chart.
